Australia's Involvement in the Afghanistan War
The Afghanistan war is the longest military conflict Australia has ever been involved in. It has involved all parts of the Australian defence force, and thousands of men and women have been deployed since 2001. Australia’s objectives over the years have changed, but the main one has been to support the US in removing terrorism within Afghanistan.
In 2001, they were tasked with helping the US defat al-Qaeda and removing Taliban from its power. In 2007, reconstructing Oruzgan, Afghanistan’s poorest province was its main priority. The last and most recent missions have been to train the Afghan national security Forces, which will replace the UN in the future once they leave.
The majority of Australia’s forces left when the US and the rest of the NATO left, and only around 400 troops in advisory and logistical positions are still deployed.
